CONNSACS Introduces Advocate Training for PREA

August 28, 2015
Reading Time: < 1 minute

The federal Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) was passed in 2003 and is the first federal law to address sexual violence in prison. PREA mandates that correctional facilities protect incarcerated people from sexual violence, and under the new standards establishes the right for survivors to access sexual assault crisis services should they experience sexual violence while incarcerated or detained.

This training introduced advocates to PREA and the types of facilities and programs in their community that house or serve incarcerated and formerly incarcerated persons. Additionally participants learned best practice in serving and supporting these victims/survivors.
