Women and Families Center – College Advocate/Counselor

Women and Families Center is seeking a College Advocate/Counselor responsible for providing crisis counseling, support, and advocacy for college victims/survivors of sexual assault, as well as provide training and education on sexual assault issues in addition to the ultimate coordination and response with participating colleges and universities.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor Degree in human service discipline preferred and/or 3 or more years of experience working with survivors of sexual violence or the human services field.
  • 2 – 4 years counseling experience preferred
  • Ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret programs, goals, objectives, policies, procedures of the SACS department.
  • Experience in counseling, public speaking, and/or outreach activities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English required.
  • Demonstrate flexibility to accommodate a rapidly changing environment.
  • Ability to work well with diverse populations required
  • Experience in sexual assault crisis intervention desired
  • Must have available/reliable transportation during office hours and on-call shifts.
  • Bilingual a plus
  • Must obtain and maintain certification as Sexual Assault Crisis Counselor required

Duties and Responsibilities:

This position requires typical work operations and responsibilities such as, but not limited to:

  • Provide crisis intervention services for college survivors of sexual assault and their loved ones; including preparation for court and legal accompaniment and advocacy, medical, and police accompaniment; short-term supportive counseling; coordinate and facilitate support groups.
  • Provide coverage for the English 24-hour hotline, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Help out when needed on the Spanish hotline if Spanish speaking. This will also include providing support for other survivors of sexual assault outside of the “college” survivors as needed.
  • Effectively apply knowledge of the legal system and community resources as it relates to sexual violence and the individual survivors.
  • Outreach and networking to local colleges and universities, partners, and organizations formal and informal, including representing program at relevant meetings.
  • Present public and/or professional development trainings to facilitate increased knowledge, skills, and response capacity.
  • Collect statistical data including participant demographics and program effectiveness.
  • Assist in the development and facilitation of prevention education programs, volunteer training, and in-services.
  • Support co-workers and work with diverse teams utilizing best practices to inspire better thinking and solutions.
  • Assist in other agency outreach activities. Some events might be outside of regular business hours.
  • Assist Director in reviewing campus policies and local legislation in relationship to sexual assault.
  • Assist the Director in program development and operation.
  • Assist Director in meeting progress reporting obligations.
  • Uphold all obligations of mandated reporting.
  • Additional related tasks as requested.

Physical Demands:

  • The position requires operation of computers and other standard office equipment.
  • The position also may require the ability to lift and carry necessary supplies for outreach activities.
  • Includes work performed off-site. Ability to travel frequently within service area. If using a personal vehicle, valid Connecticut driver’s license, reliable transportation, and proof of insurance. Standard office environments at various locations throughout the community.
  • Position generally works 35 hours (f/t) per week. May be required to work additional hours as organization demands require. Position requires a flexible schedule, including evenings, holidays, and weekends as required to perform job duties.

Organizational Relationships

The College Advocate/Counselor is supervised by and accountable to the Director of Sexual Assault Crisis Services.
